The end is near for the man called Sting.
Sting announced Wednesday on AEW Dynamite that his final match is set for Revolution 2024 next year.
The icon called to his AEW in-ring debut at Revolution 2021 and said in closing, “The only thing for sure about Sting is that his retirement is for sure.”
Sting signed a three-year deal with AEW in 2020, making his debut at Winter is Coming. While his contract expires this year, both parties agreed to a short-term extension.
AEW’s Revolution pay-per-view event is typically held in either February or March.
A neck injury in a WWE match with Seth Rollins forced Sting’s initial retirement in 2015. It was the last time he wrestled a singles match.
It was assumed Sting wouldn’t wrestle in AEW until he surprised everyone, returning to in-ring action.
Solely competing in tag team matches with Darby Allin, Sting has produced several highlight reel moments, including a few balcony dives.
Sting and Allin teamed with The Great Muta in January for Japan’s Pro Wrestling NOAH, defeating Hakushi, AKIRA, and Naomichi Marufuji in Muta’s final match.
Sting will be a stone’s throw away from 65 years old when Revolution occurs. What will Sting’s final match look like? Will he team with Darby Allin or wrestle in a singles match?
Many have called for a Sting vs. Chris Jericho match. Some have even suggested Sting put over Allin in his final bow. Jericho stated on social media he’s not interested in a match with Sting, and wrestling Allin would need to make narrative sense for it to work.
As cool as it would be to see Sting in one last singles encounter, it’s highly unlikely. Sting has never wrestled a one-on-one match in AEW.
Multi-person matches make it easier for Sting, who has a lot of miles on his body, to safely work a “less is more” style where fans get the most bang for their buck.
Sting, Darby Allin, & Adam Copeland vs. Christian Cage, Nick Wayne, and Luchasaurus in a six-man tag team match makes the most sense right now. However, the AEW landscape could look completely different in a few months.
Who knows what will happen between now and next year’s Revolution? Will there be a bitter feud leading into Sting’s last match or a celebrated affair that pays homage to the Hall of Famer?
Will Sting continue to wrestle between now and Revolution, or will he hold off on the bumps and body slams until his swan song? Only time will tell.
Maybe we’ll get Surfer Sting one last time…Hey, it could happen.
