The build for Wrestlemania is heating up with six big matches announced.
The Rock vs. John Cena
Hell in a Cell: HHH vs. The Undertaker
WWE Title: CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho
World Heavyweight Title: Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus
Intercontinental Title: Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show
Randy Orton vs. Kane
Those matches are enough for any wrestling fan to throw down their $54.95. With such a stacked line up already would any other match just be a let down? There will be a Divas’ match added to the card and the drama between Teddy Long and John Laurinaitis will probably culminate with a five man tag to determine one General Manager. Look at the current roster of wrestlers to see who doesn’t have a match yet.
Heels: Dolph Ziggler,The Miz, Jack Swagger, Primo, Epico, David Otunga, Mark Henry, Jinder Mahal, Drew McIntyre and Heath Slater, Curt Hawkins, Tyler Reks, Heath Slater, Tyson Kidd, JTG, Michael McGillicutty, Johnny Curtis, Hunico and Camacho
Babyfaces: R-Truth, Kofi Kingston, Santino, The Great Khali, Ezekiel Jackson, Ted Dibiase, Justin Gabriel, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Alex Riley, Yoshi Tatsu, Trent Baretta and Golddust.
Booker T and Jerry Lawler could always enter the fray, Brodus Clay is M.I.A and Wade Barrett is out with a broken arm. Christian and Alberto Del Rio’s return are rumored to be imminent but there is a babyface that coould be back in time and add a little something to the mix. Remember that Rey Mysterio guy? He’s been out since August and could be placed on the babyface side of the five man tag which would protect him from further injury. Besides, what would Wrestlemania be without a Rey Mysterio superhero costume?
Even if these changes are made, I wonder if you even need to add any more matches? It’s a four hour PPV and the company has stars to build so there will be more matches but besides that, why? Excitement is already at a fever pitch with the six matches announced. The roster is so thin that any other match is meaningless. If you watched Raw this week, the only segments people remember are the Punk/Jericho promo and the Rock/Cena promo. HHH/Undertaker only needed a video package since the match sells itself and Sheamus and Daniel Bryan got their time in.
The UFC only guarantees five matches per pay-per-view and they outdraw the WWE 8-1. It’s about producing content that people care about so why water down the biggest show of the year with matches that have no end game worth investing in? I know I’m in the minority here but really think about it and then Pptell me I’m crazy.

– Congratulations to Kazuchika Okada and “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett for some pretty cool stuff going on in the wrestling world. Okada captured the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship back on 2/12/12 in Osaka, Japan and Bennett will be wrestling Lance Storm at Ring of Honor’s Showdown in the Sun at the end of March. I’ve worked with Mike on the New England Independent scene and he is an outstanding talent who has worked extremely hard to get where he is today. I met Okada (Okato for you TNA fans) last year and he is a cool and humble dude who has a lot of passion for the business.
-The Rock vs. John Cena match has done something that a Wrestlemania main event hasn’t done in years. It’s got everyone talking. The main cause of chatter within the internet wrestling community is derived from the assumption that Dwayne Johnson is the heel. He is just a much of a heel as John Cena is in this situation. On the surface, Cena is fighting for the boys in the locker room who resent the Rock for stealing their spot while Rock is fighting for the fans who are sick of the CeNation. You can hate the Rock for going Hollywood or you can love the Rock for coming back to vanquish this character we can’t stand. You can love John Cena for standing up to this prima donna who left wrestling fans high and dry or you can hate him because he can’t wrestle.
Wrestlemania is in the Rock’s home town so you are not going to get the the audience to turn on him and your not going to change everyone’s opinion on John Cena. There is truth and fable to both of their arguments so there is no right or wrong answer to who is the right guy to follow. I’m of the opinion that business is being done. Should Vince McMahon avoid making millions just to spare a few feelings? Was it foolish for Dana White to grant Brock Lesnar a UFC title shot after one win despite more established fighters needing several victories? I didn’t think so. John Cena works incredibly hard but I find him lame. The mark fanboy inside wants the Rock to lay the smackdown on him and show him how it’s really done. The WWE is doing the right thing by letting the fans decide who they want to cheer for and let nature takes its course as April 1st will be one for the record books.
