AEW-NJPW Forbidden Door Set for June 26 in Chicago

The forbidden door is no longer just a cool catchphrase.

Tony Khan announced last night on Dynamit that AEW and NJPW will hold a joint pay-per-view aptly titled Forbidden Door. The show is set for Sunday, June 26, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. 

AEW president Tony Khan and NJPW president Takami Ohbari appeared on stage to make the announcement but were interrupted by AEW’s Adam Cole and NJPW’s Jay White who filled in the blanks regarding the event’s details.

AEW Dynamite and Rampage coming on NJPW’s Streamer

The AEW faithful in Japan received some great news this morning as New Japan Pro Wrestling’s streaming service New Japan World announced that AEW television shows, Dynamite and Rampage, are coming soon to the streaming service. Also, a Japanese live version of the shows are in the works, all at no additional cost.

What kind of a world is this where Cody Rhodes gets more press than Stone Cold Steve Austin? Amid rumors of Austin’s expected return at WrestleMania, Cody Rhodes’ exit from All Elite Wrestling has dominated the news cycle. It’s a shocking development that could favor WWE just in time for WrestleMania. 

I waited until after last Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite in case Cody’s departure was a work. There was no mention of Cody save for a brief nod to Cody’s chain match with Brodie Lee on commentary. Sports Illustrated reported that Cody could start with WWE soon.

Lethal is All Elite: What Does It Mean?

The first defection from Ring of Honor was revealed on Saturday night at AEW Full Gear. Former ROH World Champion Jay Lethal declared himself “All Elite” in an interview with Tony Schiavone, and he challenged Sammy Guevara to a TNT Title match tonight on Dynamite.

Last month, ROH announced they’re going on hiatus after Final Battle on December 11. The promotion informed talent that the company wouldn’t have their contracts renewed and can immediately work wherever they want.

Lethal talked about singing with AEW at the Full Gear media scrum, stating, “It all happened so quickly, a few days ago.” Lethal also stated he had about a month left on his ROH deal and would not be at Final Battle pay-per-view.

Despite ROH’s hiatus announcement, many feel the promotion is closing for good. Sadly, it’s a safe assumption to make based on history. Many promotions, small and big alike, have had to cease operations with the hope of coming back, only to be never seen again.

It’s a tale as old as time in the wrestling business.
