Wrestling Show of the Year 2017

Another year in professional wrestling has come and gone. As we look forward to the squared circle magic in 2018, 2017 had several stellar events.

New Japan Pro Wrestling delivered the goods in spades while WWE churned out some fun moments. ROH and the independent scene are on fire like never before as a new era of wrestling is coming around.

All lists of this nature are subjective. My rankings don’t mean any more or less than anyone else’s rankings. These are my picks for the top five wrestling events of 2017.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Non-Spoiler Review)

A distressed Luke Skywalker’s words of warning to an unwavering Rey: “This is not going to go the way you think,” impeccably sets the tone for the Rian Johnson-helmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Stunning visuals, a fantastic story augmented by old, returning, and new characters, along with a plethora of impactful moments, hurl the audience on a journey that they will never forget, regardless of how they feel about the film.

Crisis on Earth-X: Review

While DC Comics is having difficulty getting their act together on the silver screen, their television properties are coming up all aces. The CW Network’s yearly crossover event premiered last week as Crisis on Earth-X saw the heroes from all four “Arrowverse” television shows battle Nazis from Earth-X.

A little history lesson. There are 52 versions of Earth in the multiverse. The heroes from Arrow, Flash, and Legends reside on Earth 1 while the crew from Supergirl live on Earth 38. Interdimensional travel called breaches allows the heroes to travel between parallel Earths where they sometimes meet different versions of themselves, aka doppelgangers.

Justice League: Review

Divisive is the name of the game when it comes to DC Comics’ films. Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman, and Suicide Squad all received mixed reviews. Wonder Woman was a bonafide hit with everyone, but now it’s back to the status quo with the latest film in the series, Justice League.

Digital mustache removal, crappy CGI, inept story, and a botched Superman resurrection led to a massive critical lambasting of the film. Bad reviews don’t scare me out of seeing a movie because I need to see it for myself before casting judgment.

Is Justice League another step down for the DCEU? Is Justice League worth your time and hard-earned money? I’m here to report that Justice League is freaking amazing despite any minor problems, and these issues do not distract from an enjoyable movie. Continue reading “Justice League: Review” →

Lio’s Rush to Judgement

Newly signed NXT star Lio Rush made headlines yesterday for all the wrong reasons. WWE announced that Emma has been released and is officially no longer with the company. Rush proceeded to make light of the situation on Twitter, which didn’t endear him to fans or his fellow colleagues.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Trailer Review

The official trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on Monday night, along with the official movie poster. There are some beats borrowed from The Empire Strikes Back, however, it seems that they will be molded into something different.

Yes, there will a Jedi master reluctant to train the newbie with the refusal based on fear as opposed to doubt. Sleight of hand plot points round out the highly anticipated two minute and thirty-five-second preview of the Rian Johnson directed film.

Remembering Bobby “The Brain” Heenan

My fondest memory of Bobby Heenan occurred on an episode of WWF Prime Time Wrestling on Christmas Day of 1989. Heenan had lost a bet to Rowdy Roddy Piper weeks earlier, forcing him to commentate the entire show while wearing a Santa Claus suit.

I remember sitting on the floor in front of the Christmas tree as I enjoyed every ounce of “The Brain’s” humiliation. My joy turned to utter shock when Heenan reached his boiling point. He took off the red hat, white beard and revealed to every kid watching at home that Santa Claus is not real.

G1 Climax Breeds Stellar Matches, Bumps & Bruises

New Japan Pro Wrestling put on three absolutely amazing matches last weekend as a part of the G-1 Climax semi finals and finals. Tetsuya Naito defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi to win the block A and Kenny Omega defeated Kazuchika Okada to win block B, setting up a Naito/Omega final.

Naito/Tanahashi was a great match that was overshadowed by a stellar third Okada/Omega encounter. Omega was in a must win situation and had to do it in less than thirty minutes. Okada, however, could advance to the finals with a win or a draw due to a one point differential in his favor.

Okada went into the match with an injured neck he suffered in previous tournament bouts. Omega targeted the injury right from the onset and was relentless in his attack. Okada fought him off with everything he had but with a little over three minutes left in the match, Omega hit the One Winged Angel for the pin.

Examining the Bruan Strowman/Karen Jarrett Saga

I don’t normally like to write about wrestling stories like this, however, I don’t think anyone has heard one quite like this.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported that eleven days ago, there was an incident at a bar in Nashville where wrestlers from both WWE and Global Force Wrestling (Formerly TNA) were there to watch Jeff Hardy’s band perform.

Reportedly, Karen Jarrett (GFW) approached Braun Strowman (WWE) and asked if she could get an autograph for her son. Strowman, not knowing who she was, vulgarly denied her request. Voices of Wrestling reported that Strowman’s alleged response was “F— your son.” Karen tore into him and said that she was going to tell her son’s father, who is Kurt Angle.

Sounds crazy, right? Well, it gets better.
