Top 10 Goldberg Matches: A Wrestling Icon’s Best Moments

Few wrestlers in history burst onto the scene like Bill Goldberg did in WCW. After an injury ended his seven-year NFL career, the former defensive tackle shifted his athletic focus to professional wrestling. The rigorous training circuit at WCW’s Power Plant and a handful of dark matches led to Goldberg’s televised debut on September 22, 1997, against Hugh Morris, and he never looked back.

Goldberg became a worldwide sensation as the stoic and intense monster who amassed win after win with his signature maneuvers, the Spear and Jackhammer, morphing into the infamous undefeated streak of 173 victories. Nearly ten months into his career, Goldberg captured the World Heavyweight Championship. He became WCW’s top star during the industry’s peak of popularity.

Following WWE’s acquisition of WCW in 2001, Goldberg signed a one-year deal with WWE in 2003, where his run left a lot to be desired. A shocking return twelve years later led to a run that made up for the sins of his initial outing with the company, until it didn’t for a few years. Goldberg rebounded with some fun matches and closed out his career on the July 12, 2025, edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event in a losing effort to Gunther.

Goldberg faced some criticism for a lack of wrestling skills. His style was never about technical expertise. Instead, it was about fierce brutality in the ring. Goldberg looked like and wrestled like someone who could take on the world. That’s exactly what fans wanted to see, and his impact was undeniable.

Let’s take a look at the best matches of Bill Goldberg’s career.

Goldberg: “I Was Embarrassed to Go Out and Be a Wrestler”

Bill Goldberg is a guest on the latest episode of Uncut with Jay Cutler. Goldberg sits down with the former NFL QB and discusses college football conference realignment, NIL deals for college athletes, as they both have mixed emotions on the topic, transitioning from football to pro wrestling, where he succeeded and failed in building his character, and who ruled the roost in the WCW days.

-Speaking to Jay Cutler on Uncut, Goldberg talked about his first impressions of pro wrestling.

“Football was my thing, and I was embarrassed to go out and be a wrestler.”

-Difference between WCW and WWE

“WCW was run by the inmates. WWE is a different entity, cooperate.”

-How he looks at himself compared to other wrestlers

“[The} Rock is an entertainer, and I’m a competitor.”

-Goldberg also talks about his microphone skills and their importance

“I never developed them.” and went on to say, “You got to show range not just in wrestling but in life.”

-Why he returned to WWE in 2016

“I still ask myself that question. You know, I didn’t think I was ever gonna do it again.”

My wife and I were fortunate enough to have a little boy. He was six at the time, and I would not show him any of the stuff as I kind of repressed wrestling at the time.

“I was in New York promoting something, and I saw Brock [Lesnar], and one thing led to another, and I said, you know what, my son needs to see this in real-time.

Goldberg addresses other wrestling topics such as:

  • His thoughts on the Japanese style of wrestling.
  • Which wrestler was the hardest to “wrangle.”
  • Who were the locker room leaders in WWE and WCW
  • If he takes it personally when he gets booed
  • The match when he felt he could stick with wrestling as a career
  • Touched on people, intentionally setting him up to fail
  • If he will come back to WWE for another match and more.

In this sneak peek, Goldberg talks about how Lex Luger and Sting recruited him for WCW when he was a member of the Atlanta Falcons and how he was embarrassed at first but tried to make the best of it because he needed the money!

Goldberg Slays Lesnar with Rumble on the Horizon

20161120_survivorseries_goldberg1

If I told you that Goldberg would destroy Brock Lesnar in one minute and twenty-six seconds, you’d think I was crazy. Well, last Sunday, at Survivor Series, that is exactly what happened as a sold-out crowd at the Air Canada Centre applauded the swift destruction of the beast incarnate.

While you couldn’t tell by listening to the live audience reaction, opinion online is split down the middle at the result. Some absolutely loved the Tyson like the finish while others felt ripped off because they expected the usual 15 – 20 minute back and forth match. Wrestling Soap Box: Cena, Kane, Jericho & more!

Welcome to the first installment of my Wrestling Soap Box where I will rant, rave, analyze and make bold predictions on the latest happenings in “sports entertainment”.

– If anyone wanted the blue print on how to make the worst horror movie ever than watch this weeks episode of Raw. Kane played the role of Jason Voorhees while  Zack Ryder and Eve Torres played the innocent victims being chased through the woods. They ran from him all episode and found shelter in Ryder’s rental car, only to discover that a tire was slashed. Did they run? No. Did they try to find another car? Nope. Did they call the police using Ryder’s cell phone that he was Tweeting all night from? Oops, I wasn’t supposed to notice that…….and no. Ryder tried to change the tire while Eve hid in the car while screaming in fright. I’m sorry but if I was Eve I would have bounced a long time ago.
