My Column on Tough Enough Winner Josh’s Backstage Heat in WWE.

The-Lowedown-Early-Tough-Enough-Favorites-Joshua-Bredl-2

Professional wrestling maybe the strangest business in existence. That doesn’t mean the word “respect” is lost on the genre. In fact, it’s one of the first things listed on the syllabus of Wrestling 101. Whether you are humble or arrogant, no one is immune to taking part in this lesson.

Those who learn to appreciate the privilege of being in the business will, in time, start to earn respect from those who’ve come before you. The ones who are stubborn and hard headed will either learn the hard way or be shown the exit.

Tough Enough winner, Josh Bredl, made headlines this week for a disparaging remark he made on Twitter about the Social Outcasts being “Social Jobbers.” This reportedly drew the ire of several WWE superstars, with Stardust and Kevin Owens publicly firing shots at the Division I athlete.

Thank you, Roman: The Dawn of an Empire

RomanReignsTLC

Something interesting occurred at the end of last night’s WWE TLC pay-per-view. It wasn’t just that Roman Reigns lost another bid for the WWE title or that he snapped afterwards, beating up the League of Nations and absolutely destroying Triple H. It’s that the usual course of boos from the audience turned into a resounding chant of “Thank you, Roman.”  Continue reading “Thank you, Roman: The Dawn of an Empire”

To Buy, Or Not To Buy: The Owen Hart DVD

owenhartofgold

Wrestling fans from all walks of life are well aware of the tragedy that took the life of Owen Hart over 16 years ago. On December 8th, WWE is scheduled to release a DVD looking back on his life and career titled Owen – Hart of Gold.

This is a compilation that fans have wanted for a long time. However, years of messy (and that’s putting it nicely) legal proceedings between WWE and Owen’s widow, Martha Hart, stalled movement on the project.

It irks me when people say that fans only care about Owen Hart because of how he died. While it raised his notoriety, Owen’s mid-card status on the roster was hardly an accurate barometer of his talents.

Raw Ratings Suffer Despite Star Studded Lineup

austin

WWE brought out the big guns this week in order to prevent what could have been a historically bad rating for Monday Night Raw. While the ratings did improve from last week’s record low number of 3.27 million viewers, it was only a slight increase to 3.35 million viewers. Even with the combined competition they faced, WWE can’t be happy with an increase of only 80,000 viewers considering the big names they had on the show.  Continue reading “Raw Ratings Suffer Despite Star Studded Lineup”

The Absence of Snow as ECW Champion

al-snow-

There have been a lot of wrestling matches over the years where promoters booked the wrong person to win. While booking for financial gain isn’t an exact science, mistakes are made for a variety of reasons.

Sometimes a promoter wants to prolong the story in hopes of a larger return at the box office. Other times, these decisions are made simply to shock the audience with a curveball thrown out of nowhere.

There is one match in particular that took place in ECW where fans vehemently detested the end result, and I was one of those fans. After some information came to light, it turned out to be the right call even though it’s still a little disappointing that such a popular concept never reached its apex.  Continue reading “The Absence of Snow as ECW Champion”

Why Sting Needs to Win the WWE Title

stingwwetitle

Seth Rollins will not only defend the U.S. title against John Cena at Night of Champions, but on the very same night he will also defend the World Heavyweight title against Sting. Yes, in 2015, Sting, the franchise player of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), is headlining a WWE pay-per-view. The odds aren’t in his favor to walk out of Houston with the gold due to his age and the fact that he has been only wrestling part-time. The thing is, though, that he needs to win the title. 10 Greatest Intercontinental Title Matches Held at Summer Slam

laddermatchhbk

Another SummerSlam is in the books, and overall, it was a good show. One of the matches featured Ryback defeating The Miz and Big Show to retain the Intercontinental title. However, it was a far cry from the classics of yesteryear.

Just like WrestleMania is known for its world title matches, a hallmark of SummerSlam was the stellar Intercontinental Title bouts. They weren’t just great in-ring spectacles, but they often served as a defining moment for a wrestler’s career.

Bret Hart’s impressive back-to-back performances for the coveted title played a prominent role in ascension to the main event scene.

Many long for the days when “the biggest party of the summer” produced unforgettable IC Title matches.

Let’s look at Ten Best Intercontinental Title Matches held at SummerSlam. Continue reading “10 Greatest Intercontinental Title Matches Held at Summer Slam”
